Cloud Peak Energy’s Antelope Mine receives reclamation award from Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality

Antelope Mine ReclamationOn June 18, Cloud Peak Energy’s Antelope Mine, located near Douglas, Wyoming, received a prestigious reclamation award from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Land Quality Division. This Excellence in Surface Mining Award was received for shrub development on reclaimed lands establishing wildlife habitat.

The Antelope Mine has established consistent shrub areas, including sagebrush stands, by application of unique land form designs and shrub-specific seeding technologies using a phased approach.

Colin Marshall, President and CEO of Cloud Peak Energy, noted that: “The company greatly appreciates this award and its recognition of the value that we place on establishing quality reclamation and post-mining wildlife habitat.”

The Antelope Mine has established a system of carefully evaluating topographic diversity in the post-mine landscape and identifying areas with the highest shrub establishment potential. Then features such as rock structures and ridgeline breaks are established in the reclamation surface to enhance moisture collection. Lastly, advanced seeding technology is applied that targets appropriate shrub species for each site by using specific planting dates, planting rates and specialized seeding equipment.
